The Frankincense Tradition

Ethiopia is the spiritual home of frankincense — Boswellia papyrifera — one of the world's most precious natural resins. For millennia, Ethiopian communities have harvested this "liquid gold" from the rugged highlands, using it in sacred rituals, traditional medicine, and beauty practices.

The resin is carefully tapped from Boswellia trees that thrive in the arid mountains of Tigray and the Horn of Africa. Each bead of resin carries the essence of sun-baked earth, mountain air, and ancient wisdom.

At AIDA, we honor this tradition by sourcing pure, wild-harvested frankincense and blending it with complementary botanicals to create skincare that connects you to centuries of natural beauty rituals.

What Is Frankincense?

Frankincense — known as luban in Arabic and itan in Ethiopian languages — is an aromatic resin obtained from trees of the genus Boswellia. The highest quality frankincense comes from Boswellia papyrifera, which grows in the arid highlands of Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Sudan.

The resin is harvested by making careful incisions in the bark of Boswellia trees. The sap oozes out and hardens into translucent, golden "tears" — each one a concentrated bead of the tree's healing essence. This ancient harvesting method has remained virtually unchanged for thousands of years.

A Sacred History

Frankincense was one of the three gifts brought to the infant Jesus, alongside gold and myrrh — a testament to its immense value in the ancient world. The Egyptians used it in their embalming rituals and as an aromatic offering to the gods. The Romans burned it in temples and used it in their elaborate bathing rituals.

In Ethiopia, frankincense has been central to cultural and spiritual life for millennia. It is burned during coffee ceremonies, weddings, and religious celebrations. Traditional healers use it to treat everything from respiratory ailments to skin conditions — knowledge passed down through generations.

Benefits for Skin

Modern science confirms what ancient civilizations knew intuitively. Frankincense oil offers remarkable benefits for the skin:

  • Anti-inflammatory — Reduces redness, swelling, and irritation
  • Antimicrobial — Helps prevent bacterial growth and breakouts
  • Toning & Firming — Strengthens skin elasticity and reduces the appearance of fine lines
  • Scar Healing — Promotes cell regeneration and fades scars over time
  • Stress Relief — Its grounding aroma calms the mind and reduces anxiety

Our Commitment to Sustainability

We source our frankincense exclusively from ethical wild harvesters in Ethiopia who follow traditional, sustainable practices. The trees are never harmed — only small amounts of resin are collected, allowing each tree to continue producing for decades.

By choosing AIDA, you are not just nourishing your skin with one of nature's most precious gifts — you are supporting the communities who have stewarded these trees for generations.
